Daniel Bereczki is a professor of neurology, chairman of the Department of Neurology of Semmelweis University. He was a vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary (2013-2019) and of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen, Hungary (2004-2007). Dr. Bereczki is a board certified neurologist, psychiatrist, and clinical pharmacologist with major interest in clinical neurology, especially cerebrovascular diseases and neuroepidemiology. He has gained his clinical and research experience at the Department of Neurology, University of Debrecen, Hungary; State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA (1989-1992); and CYRIC Center, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan (1997-1998). Dr. Bereczki joined the Cochrane Collaboration in 1993, and he was an associate editor of the Cochrane Stroke Review Group between 2001-2023 and a sign-off editor of Cochrane Central between 2023-2025. He also served on the Editorial Board of the journals Stroke (American Heart Association/American Stroke Association) between 2003-2020, and of other Hungarian and international journals, like Orvosi Hetilap, Ideggyógyászati Szemle, Neuropsychopharmacologia Hungarica, Stroke Research and Treatment, and Frontiers in Stroke, and he was an associate editor and section editor for the stroke section of BMC Neurology (2005-2015). He was the president of the Hungarian Stroke Society (2010-2016) and has been the vice president of the Hungarian Neurological Society since 2010. He served as a national coordinator for the European Co-operation in Science and Technology COST-IRENE 11818 stroke project, and as the national delegate of the European Stroke Organisation: Enhancing and Accelerating Stroke Treatment working group (2017-2024). In recognition of these activities in the field of stroke he has been awarded the title of Fellow of the European Stroke Organisation (FESO, 2008) and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP, 2020). Dr. Bereczki was a consultant for the Medical Research Council, and for the National Health Service, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (UK). He was a member of the Byelaws and Membership Committee (2004-2011) and of the European Co-operation Committee (2007-2011) of the European Federation of Neurological Societies. He served 2 terms as the co-chair of the Scientific Panel on Neuroepidemiology of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) between 2019-2023 and was a member of the Neuro-COVID Task Force of the EAN between 2020-2024. He has been a member of the World Stroke Organization–Lancet Neurology Commission Stroke Collaboration Group (2021-) and of the Stroke Experts Collaboration Group (2021-), and a member of the Communication Committee of the EAN since 2022. He was the member of the Hungarian Board of Neurologists (2004-2016) and the president of the Board between 2016-2020. Dr. Bereczki represented the field of medicine as a member of the Scientific Council of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2017-2023. He has been a member of the organizing committee of several national and international conferences, like congresses of the Hungarian Neurological Society and the Hungarian Stroke Society and of the European Stroke Science Workshop of the European Stroke Organisation (2025). He was the group leader of the HUN-REN SU Neuroepidemiological Research Group between 2019-2024. Since 2009 he has been the head of the János Szentágothai Neuroscience Division of the Doctoral College of Semmelweis University.
